The organisator at the asphalt factory
Working as a factory foreman, Allan never has two days the same.
Name, title, age
Vandel asphalt factory, Denmark
What kind of training and education do you have?
Education: Industrial plumber, locksmith, management courses and ganger for an on-site fitter team.
How did you end up in your position?
My former employer contacted me when Lemminkäinen needed a foreman for the construction and operation of their new factory in Vandel in 2005. At the time, I was looking for a new job, and after two interviews/meetings, I accepted the job.
What is your typical working day like?
First, I usually take a stroll around the site to check that everything is OK and to say good morning to my people. I ask them whether they have observed anything unusual. Hereafter, I have my first telephone conversations with foremen, hauliers, suppliers, etc. In connection with large productions, great focus must be on raw materials that must be ordered, e.g. concrete, fly ash, bitumen, granite, etc.
Around noon, the first orders start coming in for the next day. Finally, the production of the next day is planned in respect of production order, times, etc. In connection with machine repairs, the time of the repair is planned, and spare parts are ordered.
What do you like most about your job?
No two days are ever the same in this job. Freedom with responsibility. I work in a good team with fantastic colleagues.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
The fact that you never know what the day will bring. And to make everything work for the different road crews and ensure that they receive the required asphalt at the agreed time. Also challenging is to make sure that the raw materials are delivered according to agreement so that the crew never runs out of materials. I also handle and solve production breakdowns. And aim to create a good workplace for my people.
What kind of a person succeeds in your position?
A person who is in full control in all situations, is able to organise and take responsibility.
