Planning and developing new things

Name, position, agePia-Sofia Lehtoniemi

Pia-Sofia Lehtoniemi
Production Engineer (Project Development), commercial properties in building construction, Helsinki metropolitan area, age 30.

What kind of training and education do you have?

I graduated as a Master of Science from Technology at Aalto University in early 2017. I majored in facilities management and specialised in property investments. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in business management, and have completed the examination for licensed real estate agents.

How did you get to your current position?

I worked as a financial expert at OP-Pohjola Group for three years. Because I wanted new challenges, I studied for a master’s degree at Aalto University.

During my studies I became interested in product development, and decided that this is what I really wanted to do. I contacted Lemminkäinen, since such a large company could surely offer versatile opportunities now and in the future. I contacted the SVP for building construction in the Helsinki metropolitan area directly. Everything happened quickly, and at the end of our first meeting I was offered a job. I also completed my master’s thesis for Lemminkäinen.

What is your typical working day like?

My work is diverse, independent and interactive. Usually I spend my days at the head office. My work involves analysing and examining things and meeting partners, potential users and authorities. Cooperation within our own team and with other teams is also an important part of my job.

In commercial properties, I participate in development projects, the preparation of project development entries and the development of our customer information system. I am also responsible for developing a data centre concept for Lemminkäinen. This role involves design work, meetings with various stakeholders and preparing sales and marketing materials.

What do you like most about your job?

I like having a challenging job and being able to learn new things every day. I am surrounded by a strong team of professionals who help me, if needed. Our team has a great community spirit. I get to meet new people and plan new development activities.

What is the most challenging aspect of your work?

Learning new things is fun but challenging. In some cases I feel like the more I know, the less I understand. I have to solve various challenges and keep up to date on continuing developments.

What kind of person does well in your role?

Someone who takes initiative and works well with different kinds of people.  Someone who’s not afraid to seize the opportunity; a wide-ranging expert with a creative mind and a good sense of humour.
