What kind of training and education do you have?
Certificate of apprenticeship in chemical processing
HSE (Health, safety and environment) engineer
How did you end up in your position?
After 17 years in different positions in the same company I wanted new challenges. Lemminkäinen was searching for an Environmental Manager, so I applied and got the job. After working in that position for 1.5 years I was asked if I wanted to be an HSQE Manager.
What is your typical working day like?
In my position there are not any typical working days. Because I often visit our sites, I travel a lot. During site visits I investigate the causes and the course of events of an accident or a near miss incident, for example. I co-operate with my colleagues in the HSEQ department and participate in different projects, such as the development our quality management system.
My job includes also a lot of office work such as follow up on reported safety observations, risk assessments, HSEQ development projects as well as communication with internal and external stakeholders.
What do you like most about your job?
I have the possibility to make an impact in people's lives, making them understand the importance of safety. I also like the diversity of the job, no day is alike.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
The fact that we have sites everywhere in Norway. It requires a lot work to implement best practices and to develop a common safety culture.
What kind of a person succeeds in your position?
To success a person must be able to talk with people throughout the organisation, and "sell" his/her message. And you must have stamina, be able to take one step at a time and get the organisation on board with you.
