Safety gravel provides a playground surface which reduces the impact from falls. Safety gravel is ideal for covering the base of playground equipment, such as climbing frames and swings. Safety gravel must be laid to a sufficient thickness to achieve the desired cushioning effect, usually to a minimum of 300mm. You can use a long, thin stick to check the hardness and thickness of the surface on old and new playgrounds. If the stick sinks easily into the gravel, the layer is likely to be sufficient in dampening impact.
Safety gravel is uncrushed screened coarse gravel without the finest grades. The most important specification of safety gravel is that it will not become compacted but remains loose and soft. Safety gravel will not freeze easily due to high water permeability.
